My introduction to tequila was in a dive college bar in the form of a shot glass. Not a lot of quality attached to that experience…
It was more than 10 years later that I took a minute to consider – tequila, like all other spirits has a top shelf too. It happened in New York City… at Dos Caminos… in a margarita and I haven’t been the same since…
I now know how to make the perfect margarita at home. Let’s start with the tequila…
There are three types of tequila: Anejo, Reposado and Blanco. For the purposes of margaritas, I would recommend using Blanco for its clean, simple ability to mix without overpowering.
Don Julio and Patron are top shelf and the cost is reflected. But, so is the taste. Both are very smooth and offer no medicinal residue. Casa Migos and Jose Cuervo are examples of brands that live up to the stereotypical sting of tequila. Avoid them…
But if top shelf premium is out of your budget, Espolon and 1800 are moderately priced brands that are just as good as Don Julio and Patron. Preference for Espolon as the best bang for the buck.
So you have the kick, now you have to squeeze some limes. When I’m really into it, I use both lemons and limes, but most of the time, I just want a margarita without having to do all that work. My alternative? I went on a quest for the best mix and found one…
I did not go to 7Eleven. I did not go to Kroger. I did not go to the corner store where they sell cigarillos by the single… remember, we’re trying to class up this drink. Go to a real liquor store or a warehouse liquor store like Total Wine… you’ll find lots of options, but the best is Powell and Mahoney.
It’s a premium mix made of all natural ingredients. And just as a backup, Barsmith is almost as good. Avoid the temptation to choose anything else. I’ve done the work for you. Take the W.
You now have everything you need to create a Dos Caminos level original margarita. Add ice cubes. Enjoy.
But I also have a bonus for you…
Pick your favorite fruit. apples, strawberries, blueberries, mango, papaya. Chop, Add one cup. Add any fruit juice – orange, apple, pineapple. Purée. Add 1/4 cup. Mix and blend. Another W…
The purée changes the consistency to more like a margarita smoothie, but we’re not done yet…
You can still add ice, blending all of it to make a frozen margarita. Win #3..
So if you’ll excuse me, I’ve managed to thirst trap myself into making one right. Now.
Strawberry purée, ice cubes. 💥💥💥
Cheers
