Review

I don’t think I really need to give a set-up to Anchorman 2… For anyone who is a regular moviegoer, you know The legend of Ron Burgundy. This is just a continuation of the legend. If you don’t know, The legend of Ron Burgundy, please get the first Anchorman movie, watch it, then read this review…

Story: Ron and the channel 4 news team are back together on a new 24 hour news network called Global News Network (GNN). Ron and Veronica Corningstone are now married with a son and living in New York City. They work as an anchor team for the network until Veronica gets promoted into the main anchor spot and Ron gets fired. They break up professionally and personally… Enter the GNN news team.

I think the writers do a good job advancing the story, even being as silly as it is. But, don’t we expect all Anchorman movies to be silly? Even so, I was on board the entire time until the end. The ending of this movie is beyond silly. It was plain stupid. It ruins the entire movie. I expected better…

Performances: Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and David Koechner do not disappoint as Ron Burgundy, Brick Tamland, Brian Fantana and Champ Kind respectively. James Marsden as the pretty boy anchorman is luke-warm as is Christina Applegate as Veronica, but, Meagan Good as Linda Jackson, the foxy black General Manager is fun.

Though brief, I also like Harrison Ford as the retiring network anchor. It’s spot-on.

Visual: Love the 70’s look. In reality, I hate the 70’s look, but, I like to see it re-created in movies. It reminds me of TV when I was a kid and didn’t realize exactly how ugly the clothes were. But, this movie hit the nail on the head. Every tacky leisure suit… Every 70’s armored car looking Buick… Even Ron’s Winnebago looks exactly the part. They also managed to throw in a couple of clever references to future technology as well, like the internet.

Rating: Anchorman 2 gets a C- from me. Clearly, all of the promotion leading up to its release date was over-done. To be expected. But, to let the movie drop off into the ending the way it does was an insult. We get there will likely be more sequels to come, but, let’s hope they get wrapped up with a little more ingenuity.

See Anchorman 2 on DVD… if you’re a fan. If you’re not a fan, don’t waste your time or your money at the theatre…
