Review
This is the year 2022. The stories of Downton Abbey are currently set in the late 1920’s, approaching the 1930’s. The next Earl of Grantham has been identified. We still have almost 100 years of Downton stories to hear…
Settle in…
Story: I don’t know how Downton stories aren’t solid. The foundation for every iteration is already there – Julian Fellowes simply needs to come up with the next character life event or creative experience.
I will admit the first movie wasn’t the best experience highlighting a visit from the royal family, but, the personal stories managed to save the effort. This go ‘round, Fellowes nailed it. He manages to find an interesting collaboration between the film industry and the need for Downton to continue moving into the future. Mutually beneficial interests confirmed.
And we are pretty sure there will be a next Downton Abbey movie…
Performances: This is an ensemble cast… the epitome of an ensemble cast. As soon as you decide you have a favorite character, another emerges as a standout. Even as I’m writing this, I’m trying to make the case for one character over another and it’s not working.
Downton Abbey is quintessentially a complete experience with the ability to highlight its own individual experiences. Find me another franchise so solid…
Visual: Where do I start?
It’s a visual marvel because of the sheer amount of detail committed to each movie. Of course, like all English period pieces, the British way of life cannot be less than in any way. No need to second guess the quality of the costumes or the backdrop/sets or the table displays of food. All spot on. But the big visual winner: the propriety.
Rating: A-. While this franchise is best described as solid, solid also suggests predictable, thus the minus. Regardless, Downton Abbey is one of the few franchises that can produce sequels without harsh, critical judgement. It’s comfort food.
Everything in Downton Abbey: A New Era is a set up for what comes next. And with clear, future stories highlighted within the central story, it’s legacy is definite.
