Review

Judy Garland starred as Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. She was 15 at the time. Her life appears to have been all downhill from there…

Judy is the story of the last year of Judy Garland’s life.

Story: This is the typical mid-century Hollywood studio starlet story. That’s a mouthful. And this version isn’t anymore original than any of the others. We’ve seen this before. The value of this story is that it’s specific to Judy Garland. Otherwise it’s the same as all of the others…

Performances: Renee Zellwegger portrays Judy Garland. Not a big fan of Renee Zellwegger, but, she did a decent job. Not sure it’s Oscar worthy, but, my bet is that the Academy will think otherwise. She will get nominated for Judy

Her last husband – Mickey Deans – portrayed by Finn Wittrock is a typical New York Burroughs kinda guy. Nothing of note in this performance…

In fact, none of the performances in this film are much of a standout…

Visual: It looks like 1939 when L. B. Mayer is telling a 17-year-old Judy Garland what it takes to be a star….
It looks like 1969 when Judy is forced to leave her kids with her ex-husband – Sid Luft – so she can take a gig in London…
London looks like 1969 London…

Rating: C. Not impressive. As expected, SAD. But didn’t offer much compelling drama as Judy Garland’s reputation for being dramatic certainly precedes her…

In fact, the most compelling emotion in the movie is the feeling of discomfort as you watch her train wrecks on stage.

See this on demand if you see this at all…
