Story: I don’t know if there’s much a writer can do to tell this story incorrectly. It tells itself. Fact based, historical markers, glue.

I imagine the way it’s glued together could be open to interpretation and finding the most significant stories from the characters lives could make a difference, but…

The screenplay was written by Anthony McCarten, directed by Fernando Meirelles. They took this pivotal moment in history and wrapped it in suspense. The conversations between the Popes was absolutely captivating. And they also take the time to let the audience see two men – Joseph Ratzinger and Jorge Mario Bergoglio. Brilliant.

Performances: So Anthony Hopkins as Pope Benedict and Jonathan Pryce as Pope Francis need no introduction. Veteran actors with the film pedigree to represent the stature of these roles. Someone is getting nominated for an Oscar and my guess is that it would be Jonathan Pryce. More of the story focuses on Pope Francis’ calling to the church.

Visual: This film travels across time beginning with the moment Jorge Bergoglio accepts his call to the church. The director also did a great job of providing a chronicle of the career culminating in the papacy of Pope Francis in pictures.

Rating: A+. I hung on every word they said to each other. This film is not about religion but about conviction. It’s about doubt and also revelation. It’s about being your authentic selves and letting reality guide the outcome.
