Review
Bohemian Rhapsody is the story of the rock band Queen. For those of you who don’t know, they were an English band during the 1970’s and ‘80‘s with a front man by the name of Freddie Mercury. This story tells their journey from struggling artists to rock royalty…
We also get an introduction to the legendary Freddie Mercury.
Story: Like many bands, Queen started as a group of guys who wanted to play music. Nothing new there. But, telling that story properly is sometimes difficult. Screenwriter Anthony McCarten has created a comprehensive story that leaves the viewer with few questions. We get to experience the evolution of Queen’s most famous hits… their rise in popularity and also the band’s trials and tribulations.
But we also get to see the revelation of who Freddie Mercury really was. His journey has it’s ups and down and finds you wondering if there will be a happy ending. This story provides all of those elements.
Performances: Clearly, one of the standout performances in this film has to be Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury. In their heyday, Freddie Mercury was larger than life. This film captures those moments… captures his genius. Ironically, the other band members just blend into the film. Many of the other characters just blend into the film. This film defines the quintessential front man who MAKES the band.
While there are scenes and moment with other characters that are compelling, this film could be called Freddy Mercury and nothing would be awry…
Oscar nomination for Rami Malek…
Visual: This film looks like the 70’s and 80’s in England. Wardrobe is of course spot on and most notably, Freddie Mercury’s features are captured in the most conspicuous way.
Of note is the actual concert performances from their humble beginnings to their Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium in 1985. Fun…
Rating: A. Oscar nomination for Bohemian Rhapsody…
By the end of this film, I wanted for nothing. It was a fond reminder of songs I’d heard from my childhood with a window into how they came to be. And it gave me a better understanding of who Freddy Mercury was.
See this film as soon as possible…
